PSLE English 2027: the complete guide for parents
Four papers, 200 marks, one Achievement Level. Here is how PSLE English works, where the marks really are, and what your child can start on now if they sit the PSLE in 2027.

On this page 11 sections
Key takeaways
- PSLE English has four papers and 200 marks: Writing (25%), Language Use and Comprehension (45%), Listening Comprehension (10%) and Oral (20%).
- Paper 2 carries almost half the marks, and the Oral is worth twice as much as Listening.
- Your child’s English result is reported as an Achievement Level from AL1 to AL8. AL1 needs 90 marks or more out of 100.
- The 2027 exam dates are not published yet. In 2026, the Oral came first, in August, about six weeks before the written papers.
- Start with the skills that take longest to build, speaking and Synthesis and Transformation, rather than with past papers.
Who this guide is for
If your child is in Primary 5 this year, they will most likely sit the PSLE in 2027. This page explains PSLE English from the top down: what the four papers are, how many marks each carries, how the final grade is worked out, and where to begin.
It is the starting point for our PSLE 2027 guides. Each section links to a fuller guide on that paper, so you can read this page once and come back to the parts you need.

Where these facts come from. The format and mark split are as SEAB set them out from 2025 and as primary schools presented them to parents in 2026 assessment briefings. SEAB publishes the official syllabus for each year at seab.gov.sg; if anything changes for 2027, we will update this page. Paper 1: Writing (50 marks)
Paper 1 has two parts.
- Situational Writing (14 marks). Your child responds to a stimulus by writing an email or a letter. The marks reward covering every piece of information the task asks for, in a tone that suits the reader.
- Continuous Writing (36 marks). Your child writes at least 150 words on one given topic. Three pictures are provided, and your child must use at least one of them. Since 2025, children can approach the topic from different perspectives and write in any suitable text type, as long as it is continuous prose. The marks are for writing skills, not for choosing a particular text type.
Continuous Writing is the single largest section in the whole exam. Strong writing usually grows out of strong reading and talking, which is one reason we encourage regular speaking practice from P5.
Paper 2: Language Use and Comprehension (90 marks)
Paper 2 is almost half of the English grade. It comes in two booklets.
| Booklet A (multiple choice) | Marks |
|---|---|
| Grammar | 10 |
| Vocabulary | 5 |
| Vocabulary Cloze | 5 |
| Visual Text Comprehension | 5 |
| Booklet B (written answers) | Marks |
|---|---|
| Grammar Cloze | 10 |
| Editing | 10 |
| Comprehension Cloze | 15 |
| Synthesis and Transformation | 10 |
| Comprehension (open-ended) | 20 |
Grammar and vocabulary run through almost every section, not just the two MCQ sections that carry their names. Our Paper 2 guide takes each section in turn, and our guide to Synthesis and Transformation covers the section children most often find hardest to self-study.
Paper 3: Listening Comprehension (20 marks)
Every question in the Listening paper is multiple choice. Some questions use pictures, which schools describe as “graphic items”: seven of them in the format shared with parents. Candidates are given time to read the questions before each recording is heard, and the options are not read out.
At 10%, it is the smallest paper, but the marks are often the easiest to lose through habits rather than through weak English. Our Listening Comprehension guide explains the habits to build.
Paper 4: Oral Communication (40 marks)
The Oral has two parts. In Reading Aloud (15 marks), your child reads a passage that comes with a short given situation, which tells them who they are speaking to and why. In the Stimulus-Based Conversation (25 marks), examiners show a photograph and ask a series of questions, starting with the picture and moving to your child’s own experiences and views.
The Oral is usually the first PSLE paper of the year, weeks before the written papers. Our guide to how the Oral works explains both parts, and our debriefs of PSLE 2026 Day 1 and Day 2 show the kinds of questions candidates reported this year.
How the English grade is worked out
The four papers add up to 200 marks, and that total is converted to a score out of 100. Your child then receives an Achievement Level (AL) for English, from AL1 (the best) to AL8. MOE publishes these reference mark ranges:
| Achievement Level | Raw mark range (out of 100) |
|---|---|
| AL1 | 90 and above |
| AL2 | 85 to 89 |
| AL3 | 80 to 84 |
| AL4 | 75 to 79 |
| AL5 | 65 to 74 |
| AL6 | 45 to 64 |
| AL7 | 20 to 44 |
| AL8 | Below 20 |
The bands are narrow at the top. Between AL1 and AL3 there are only ten marks out of 100, which is the same as twenty raw marks out of 200. That is roughly the value of the whole Listening paper, or half of the Oral. Small, steady gains across several papers often matter more than a big gain in one.
Your child’s overall PSLE Score is the sum of the ALs for their four subjects, from 4 (the best) to 32.
When is PSLE English in 2027?
SEAB has not published the 2027 timetable yet. As a guide, in 2026 schools shared these tentative dates with parents: the Oral on 12 and 13 August, Listening Comprehension on 15 September, and the written papers from 24 to 30 September, with results in November.
The 2027 school terms are confirmed by MOE: Primary 2 to 6 start on 5 January 2027, and Term 3 runs from 28 June to 3 September. If the pattern holds, the Oral would fall during Term 3. We keep a page on the 2027 dates and will update it as soon as the timetable is published.
Where to start, if your child is in P5 now
It is tempting to begin with past-year papers. We suggest starting instead with the skills that take the longest to build and that assessment books cannot easily train:
- Speaking out loud, often. Answers in the Oral improve only through speaking. Ten minutes a few times a week is enough to start. See our home practice plan.
- Synthesis and Transformation. Each sentence pattern has to be learnt, and there are many of them. A few questions a day adds up.
- Reading widely. It feeds comprehension, vocabulary and writing all at once.
- Listening carefully. A short weekly listening set builds the habit of reading the question first.
Our month-by-month plan for 2027 sets this out from now until the exam, and our guide to starting P6 covers the year-end holidays.
How our practice app fits in
Our app covers three of the four papers. Here is what each part does, and what is free:
| Paper | In the app | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Oral | Reading Aloud and picture-based conversation, spoken out loud, with a mark, written feedback and a model answer after every attempt. A mock oral in exam format. | 1 practice with no account, 3 in total with a free account; then from S$19.90 |
| Paper 2 | Grammar, Vocabulary, and Synthesis and Transformation at P4, P5 and P6 level, marked straight away with explanations | Free with an account |
| Listening | Recorded passages with multiple-choice questions, each recording playable twice, with explanations after you submit | The first set free with an account; every set with full access |
Practice marks in the app are guidance, not official PSLE marks. Our walkthrough of the app shows what each screen looks like.
Questions parents ask
Has the PSLE English format changed for 2027?
This guide follows the format SEAB introduced from 2025 and that schools described to parents in 2026. SEAB publishes the syllabus for each exam year on its website. We have not seen any announced change for 2027, and we will update this guide if SEAB announces one.
What is the difference between Standard and Foundation English?
Foundation English is a separate paper with fewer marks (100 in total) and a different Listening paper. This guide covers Standard English, which most children take. Your child’s school will tell you which level they are taking.
When are the PSLE 2027 English exams?
SEAB has not published the 2027 timetable yet. We keep a page on what is known about the 2027 dates, and we will update it when the timetable is out.
Is the Oral really 20% of the English grade?
Yes. The Oral is 40 of the 200 marks: 15 for Reading Aloud and 25 for the Stimulus-Based Conversation. That is twice the weight of the Listening Comprehension paper.
Where should we start if we only have time for one thing?
Short, regular speaking practice. It is the skill that improves slowest and the one children practise least, and it also helps with writing. Our ten-minute home plan is a good first step.
